1. General information

1.1. Aims of the course

The expected results of the course respond to the following general aims

The importance of this subject lies in the fact that it is mirroring the current relevance - in Spain and abroad - of studies in the history of historiography. It is characterized by its approach coming from intellectual and socio-cultural history, which allows us to develop a wide analysis by avoiding a mere retrospective of books and authors from the current situation. This analysis includes, in addition to the examination of the foremost Spanish historians and their activities, that of cultural institutions that have them sheltered (their political and social circumstances too), without forgetting both their relations with foreign authors and their capacity to assimilate foreign influences.

1.2. Context and importance of this course in the degree

As a matter especially devoted to Spanish historiography and its social and political context, the contents of this subject are intended to complement all of those subjects of the Master degree tending to expose the political and cultural aspects of the history of Spain in modern and contemporary ages.

1.3. Recommendations to take this course

To have basic knowledge of historiography and of the history of Spain in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Basic knowledge of the English language.

2. Learning goals

2.1. Competences

After completing the course, the student will be competent in the following skills:

Capacity to distinguish theoretical and methodological differences in the historical discipline.

Knowledge of its current scientific trends.

These abilities are to be specified thus:

To attribute the Spanish historians and their works to certain intellectual trends and historical circumstances.
To distinguish the peculiarities of Spanish historiography compared to other neighbouring historiographic traditions.
To assess what the place of Spanish historiography in the international field is - including its dependence on influences and debates coming from foreign countries and from Hispanism.

2.2. Learning goals

The student, in order to pass the course, will have to show her/his competence in the following skills:

Knowledge of the main institutions devoted to promoting the writing of history in Spain, from the late eighteenth century to the present.

Knowledge of the foremost historians (Modesto Lafuente, Rafael Altamira, Jaume Vicens Vives...).

Knowledge of the pivotal aspects and challenges of Spanish historiography throughout the two last centuries: the representation of the liberal idea of nation, its participation in the regeneration movement, the Civil War of 1936-39 and the exiles, the reception of the paradigm of economic and social history, the influence of current historical trends.

Ability to attribute Spanish works and authors to their respective historiographic trends and historical circumstances.

2.3. Importance of learning goals

The skills adquired in the course:

Contribute to the development of an advanced knowledge in political and intellectual history, in addition to the inquiry into the topic of historical memory in contemporary Spain. This will be achieved through the analysis of aspects such: the study of the foremost Spanish historians and hispanists, and their circumstances; the institutions and associations devoted to promoting the research and the teaching of history; the memories.
Help provide a context – scientific and intellectual circumstances – for Spanish historical bibliography in general, and for pivotal debates on historiography in Spain in particular.
Help to place the Spanish historiography in the international field.
Contribute to better understanding the relationships between primary and secondary sources in historical research, because of the special topic developed in this subject (historians and their historical writings).
Contribute to developing the ability to take part in academic debates on relevant aspects concerning Spanish society and culture.

3. Assessment (1st and 2nd call)

3.1. Assessment tasks (description of tasks, marking system and assessment criteria)

The student will prove that he/she has achieved the expected learning results by means of the following assessment tasks:

Assessment tasks:

Attendance to classes and active participation in them.
Individual presentation summarizing a book or a report/article to be discussed in the classroom.
Composition of a ten-page essay/paper.
Test.

Assessment criteria:

Active participation will be considered: the involvement in the discussion of the texts by Spanish historians (see below), in addition to the debates started as a result of public presentations or suggested by the professor.
Topics for individual presentations will be taken from the bibliography of the subject – with prior advice by the professor – preferably from the section “La situación actual” (referred to current trends and debates) (see below).
The ten-page individual essay or composition will be supervised by the professor, consisting of free topic. It will be taken into account its emphasis in the vocabulary and in the presentation, the rigour of information, and its capacity for criticism.
The exam will consist of the development of a topic imparted by the professor.

Assessment system:

The grade will be distributed thus:

Attendance to classes and participation: 20%
Individual presentation: 20%
Ten-page essay/paper: 40%
Exam: 20%

4. Methodology, learning tasks, syllabus and resources

4.1. Methodological overview

The learning methodology of this course will consist of three types of activities:

1. Lectures.

2. Bibliographic research. The bibliography (available on moodle.unizar.es) is divided into three groups, in accordance with the aforementioned conception of the history of historiography:

Works of Spanish history of historiography (XVIII-XX centuries).
Studies on intellectual history (XVIII-XX centuries).
State of the art, overview, and recent debates on Spanish historiography.

3. Analysis of texts (see the section of Learning tasks).

4.2. Learning tasks

The course includes the following learning tasks:

Lectures.
Analysis of texts (texts available in moodle.unizar.es).
Presentations and discussions by the students.

4.3. Syllabus

The course will address the following topics:

The new historical genres in the 19^th century and their precedents: national history, history of civilization, and economic and social history.
The emergence of professional historiography in Spain.
The foreign influences and the role of Hispanism during the 20^th century.
The current situation.

4.4. Course planning and calendar

Classes will take place from October to January (both included) in the Seminar of Contemporary History during the timetable planned by the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras. Practices will take place in the same timetable. Tutorials will take place at the professor’s office on Mondays and Tuesdays (12 h.–13h. p.m.). The final exam will take place in the Seminar of Contemporary History during the last week of the academic semester, which will be informed in advance.

1. Información Básica

1.1. Objetivos de la asignatura

La asignatura y sus resultados previstos responden a los siguientes planteamientos y objetivos:

La relevancia general de esta asignatura radica en el hecho de que recoge la importancia actual (tanto en España como fuera) de los estudios de historiografía. Le caracteriza el tener un enfoque de historia intelectual y socio-cultural a fin de presentar un análisis amplio, evitando una mera retrospectiva de la situación presente. Dicho análisis incluye, además del estudio de los más relevantes historiadores españoles y de sus actividades, el de las instituciones culturales que los han cobijado (así como sus circunstancias políticas y sociales), y sus contactos con el exterior y capacidad para recibir las influencias extranjeras.

1.2. Contexto y sentido de la asignatura en la titulación

Como materia dedicada específicamente a la historiografía española y a su contexto político y social, el contenido de esta asignatura sirve para complementar a todas aquellas asignaturas de la titulación dedicadas a explicar los aspectos políticos y culturales de la España contemporánea.

1.3. Recomendaciones para cursar la asignatura

Conocimientos básicos de historiografía en general y de la historia de España de los siglos XVIII a XX.
Conocimientos de inglés.

2. Competencias y resultados de aprendizaje

2.1. Competencias

Al superar la asignatura, el estudiante será más competente para...

Distinguir la diversidad teórica y metodológica de la disciplina histórica.

Conocer sus actuales tendencias científicas.

Dichas competencias se especifican de la siguiente manera:

1) Capacidad para adscribir a los historiadores españoles y su obra historiográfica dentro de unas determinadas corrientes intelectuales y circunstancias históricas.

2) Capacidad para distinguir las peculiaridades de la historiografía española en relación con otras tradiciones historiográficas vecinas.

3) Capacidad para valorar el puesto de la historiografía española en el contexto internacional, y su grado de dependencia de las influencias y los debates procedentes del extranjero, incluido el Hispanismo.

2.2. Resultados de aprendizaje

El estudiante, para superar esta asignatura, deberá demostrar los siguientes resultados...

Conocimiento de las principales instituciones dedicadas a impulsar la escritura de la historia en España, desde finales del siglo XVIII hasta el presente.

Conocimiento de los más destacados historiadores (Modesto Lafuente, Rafael Altamira, Jaume Vicens Vives...).

Conocimiento de los principales aspectos y desafíos de la historiografía española a lo largo de los dos últimos siglos: la representación de la idea liberal de nación, la participación en el movimiento regeneracionista, la guerra civil y el exilio, la recepción del paradigma de la historia económica y social, la influencia de las corrientes historiográficas actuales.

Capacidad para adscribir obras y autores españoles dentro de su corriente historiográfica y sus circunstancias históricas.

2.3. Importancia de los resultados de aprendizaje

Las competencias adquiridas en la asignatura:

Ayudan al conocimiento avanzado de la historia política e intelectual, y de la memoria histórica de la España contemporánea, a través del estudio de aspectos como: los principales historiadores españoles e hispanistas y sus circunstancias; las instituciones y asociaciones dedicadas a la promoción de la investigación y de la enseñanza de la historia, las memorias.
Sirven para contextualizar, en sus circunstancias científicas e intelectuales, la bibliografía histórica en general y los debates centrales de la historiografía en España en particular.
Sirven para ayudar a situar la historiografía española en el panorama internacional.
Contribuyen a comprender mejor las relaciones entre las fuentes primarias y secundarias en la investigación histórica dado el tema peculiar de la asignatura (los historiadores y sus escritos históricos).
Contribuyen a desarrollar la habilidad de intervenir en debates académicos sobre aspectos relevantes relativos a la sociedad y la cultura en España.

3. Evaluación

3.1. Tipo de pruebas y su valor sobre la nota final y criterios de evaluación para cada prueba

El estudiante deberá demostrar que ha alcanzado los resultados de aprendizaje previstos mediante las siguientes actividades de evaluacion

Actividades de evaluación:

Asistencia y participación activa en el desarrollo de las clases.
Exposición individual pública de la reseña de un artículo o libro para ser discutido en clase.
Preparación de un trabajo o ensayo (10 folios).
Prueba de examen.

Criterios de valoración:

Se considerará participación activa: la implicación en los comentarios de textos de historiadores españoles (infra.) así como en los debates que se susciten con motivo de las exposiciones públicas o a propuesta del profesor.
Las exposiciones públicas individuales se tomarán de la bibliografía de la asignatura, previo asesoramiento por parte del profesor, preferentemente del apartado “La situación actual” (corrientes y debates actuales) (infra.).
El trabajo escrito individual constará de 10 folios, será supervisado por el profesor y consistirá en un tema libre. Se valorará la riqueza de su vocabulario y la presentación formal, el rigor de la información y la capacidad de crítica.
El examen final consistirá en el desarrollo de un tema impartido por el profesor.

Sistema de evaluación:

La calificación final se distribuirá de la siguiente manera:

Asistencia y participación: 20%
Exposición individual: 20%
Trabajo escrito: 40%
Examen: 20%

4. Metodología, actividades de aprendizaje, programa y recursos

4.1. Presentación metodológica general

El proceso de aprendizaje que se ha diseñado para esta asignatura se basa en lo siguiente:

1. Explicaciones del profesor.

2. Consulta de tres clases de bibliografía conforme a la concepción de la historia de la historiografía que se ofrece (bibliografía disponible en moodle.unizar.es):

a) Obras de historia de la historiografia española (Siglos XVIII-XX).
b) Estudios de historia intelectual (siglos XVIII-XX).
c) Estados de la cuestión y debates recientes.

El programa queda dividido en los siguientes apartados:

Los nuevos géneros de la historiografía en el siglo XIX y sus antecedentes: historia nacional, historia de la civilización e historia económica y social.
El surgimiento de la historiografía profesional en España.
Las influencias extranjeras y el papel del Hispanismo en el siglo XX.
La situación actual.

En el primer día de clase se proporcionará más información sobre esta cuestión.

Las clases se desarrollarán de octubre a enero (ambos incluidos) en el seminario de Historia contemporánea, en el horario previsto por la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras.

Las prácticas tendrán lugar en el mismo horario. Las tutorías tendrán lugar en el despacho del profesor en el horario habitual de tutorías (Lunes a miércoles, de 12 a 13 horas).

El examen final tendrá lugar en el seminario de Historia Contemporánea, en la última semana del período lectivo del curso.
